During my Autumn photography trip this year, I got to take an afternoon trip to Shiraito Falls in Nagano Prefecture. This shouldn’t be confused with the Shiraito Falls in Shizuoka Prefecture, as they’re completely different locations relatively far away from each other (although both are beautiful). The Shiraito Waterfall in Nagano is actually a unique type of waterfall. With most waterfalls, a river reaches a cliff where it tumbles over and continues the river below. This waterfall however quite literally appears out of nowhere. Rather than flowing from a river, it comes from an underground water supply where it bursts forth out of the ground due to the pressure. I can only imagine how much pressure it must be to actually push through the rocky ground itself, but it’s definitely an interesting thing to see in person and makes for a unique photography subject. There’s not much around the area itself, just a few food stalls and such, but it’s worth the trip if you’re nearby.
